I am a psychotherapist in private practice that has been in the field of eating disorders for over 25 years. In 1984, after a family member’s recovery from an eating disorder, I created the PA Educational Network for Eating Disorders (PENED) a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational, supportive and referral services to the general and professional public on the causes, treatment and prevention of eating disorders and related issues. In 1987, I became a Founder of the National Eating Disorders Association where I served on the Board of Directors for 16 years holding many board offices as well as the position of Acting Executive Director.  As a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Eating Disorders Coalition for Policy, Research and Action (EDC), I am dedicated to staying abreast of the most recent research, best practice and advocacy for those suffering with eating disorders, their families and friends. Each year, I lobby in Washington, DC for mental health parity and equitable services and education for eating disorders. In 2004, I received the Lifetime Achievement award from the EDC. I am a published writer, nationally recognized educational trainer of both professional and general audiences, and media spokesperson on the topics of eating disorders and related issues.

In my private practice, I provide compassionate, non-judgmental and comprehensive treatment for people suffering with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. I work as part of a team with physicians, dietitians, psychiatrists and other significant professionals necessary for good treatment of these complicated and potentially life threatening illnesses.  I use the modalities of individual, group and family therapy, as well as psycho-educational support groups which are also open to family and friends. I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Psychotherapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Ego State Therapy and a variety of other methods geared to the treatment of eating disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma. I also am trained to do EMDR with clients to help resolve trauma issues. Each client is viewed as an individual with her or his own history and needs in this specialized treatment which is geared to obtaining a more functional and improved quality of life and happiness.
